Adding videos to your company web page

Video is becoming popular amongst businesses wishing to market themselves in a new and innovative way. Depending on what industry your businesses is in, video can work for you in many ways. If you want to showcase your premises, surroundings or size of your company then having a short video will be a great way to interact with your viewers, allowing them to actually see for themselves.

In general, keep videos to a reasonable length. Unless you are doing a presentation or tutorial, most videos should be approximately two to three minuets long maximum to ensure you do not lose the viewers interest.

In the past five years we have seen many large retailers adding video to their sites such as Asos that uploaded footage of their clothes been worn on the catwalk. This has proved highly successful for many of them.

Even the motoring industry are signing up for video on their sites. For some time now people have been making short videos of a car they wish to sell and uploading it to sites such as YouTube to give the viewer a 360 degree view of the vehicle, but some dealers have taken this to the next stage by allowing you to video link with them as they show you parts of the car you wish to see via a live video feed.

Moving elements within your web design

Many companies are looking to modernise their online presence and improve the look of their website. People often get a little carried away with the amount of quirky objects they want to add to their site and make it too personal rather than being able to take a step back and look at it from a visitors point of few.

Having a few rotating header images or a ticker showing latest news etc is not a massive problem and can sometimes work well on a website, be always be aware that you do not want to take the viewers focus away from the main message that you are trying to get across. I recently saw a website that had scrolling testimonials on the side where the box was expanding and shrinking all the time. They also had rotating header images and a small video playing in the side bar. I immediately left the site as I found it all too distracting and could not concentrate on the main information that I was interested in. Its all about getting the right balance and any good web design company will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Should you have a meet the team page on your website?

When having a website created many businesses wonder whether they should have a “meet the team” page. This is usually a page dedicated to listing who is involved within the business and often includes a breif overview of their experience and /or qualifications and sometimes a picture of them.
Some members of staff may not feel happy about having their photo on the website, so many companies are now using avatars or caricatures to depict them.
There are arguments for both for and against having a meet the team page. Often customers like to see who works within a company and the expertises they have prior to going to them with their business. If it is a small family run company then these pages can work well, but can also show exactly how small the company is, which could potentially lose you business as many consumers (especially other businesses) may feel that a small business will not be ale to cope with demands.

Understanding Website Statistics

All websites should have some sort of statistics package installed on it to allow you to track the progress of the website. Many hosting companies offer a basic stats package that is installed on the server that will usually show you the visits to the site, pages viewed and possibly the source of the traffic (i.e. if the visitor has come from Google, Bing or direct etc.).

Google offers a stats package called Google analytics. The software is free to use at present but you may incur a small charge from your programmer to install the code on to your website. This allows you to drill down a lot deeper in to each visitor, finding out not only where they have come from but what keyword or phrase they typed in to find you, the pages they visited, time spent on the site and even the page they exit the site on. It also allow you to set up goals to track a visitor – so for example you could set up a goal that tracks every time someone fills in an enquiry form or uses a calculator on your site. You can then track this visitor to see if they make a purchase or contact you.
