Turing traffic in to conversions – part one

When marketing companies talk about websites, you may hear them say about traffic vs conversions. This basically means the number of visitors to your site versus the conversions (a conversion can be anything from an enquiry through to a sale online) and is vital in establishing how well your website is performing.

If you find that you are getting a lot of traffic through to the site, but not many of these are turning in to enquiries or sales, then you need to establish why that is. There are a number of points to look at when trying to work this out and often a large amount of testing will be needed to try and establish and fix the problem.

There is no point having a thousand visitors to your site every day but not having any conversions, so it is worth investing a proportion of your marketing budget in to investigating this and monitoring conversion rates.

Work around for responsive designs

Responsive designed websites are ones that automatically adapt to the screen and device they are being viewed on. This means that the text / images and layout will shrink or enlarge in proportion to each other when viewed on any device.

Most new websites designed should be mobile compatible, but if you have an older site you may find that it does not render correctly on tablets and mobiles for example. This is because of a number of factors, but do not despair, it does not automatically mean that you need a completely new site.

Depending on what content management system you use, you may be able to find a plug in or add on that will automatically create a mobile version of your site. You may have to configure this to ork properly but can save a lot of time and money. Google also takes this in to account when it comes to ranking, favouring site that are responsive.

Finding great deals on design printing

If you are looking to have business cards or leaflets printed or if you also need them designing, then you can save yourself money by shopping around. Ideally you want to use a company that have a great reputation and many printing companies will send out samples of their work for you to compare the quality.

Company’s such as Vista Print offer low cost printing solutions but their range of designs can be quite limited and the quality is not always great. I recently found a printing company called Moo that although are a little more expensive the service I received and the quality of the products were second to non. After sending some business cards to print, the colour of the font was too dark and so when they arrived they were hardly readable. I followed this up with an email to the company who offered to print the cards again for me for free using a different font colour. I also often find voucher codes online for 20%+ off making them cheaper than some of the other leading print companies.

A picture speaks a thousand words in your website design

You can explain until your blue in the face what products or services your company offers, but sometimes the best way is to be able to show people a picture. Prior to the boom of the internet, many people had to rely on Yellow pages and recommendations to find companies that sold what they needed. But then came the issue where customers wanted to be able to see the product before they bought it.

With the internet now used by many of us on a daily basis, it makes sense to have an online presences to showcase your company products / services. Adding photos and videos in to your website design and help sell your products two fold. After some extensive research, we have found that customers are more than twice as likely to buy from a company that shows them a picture of the product compared to one that doesn’t.

Mobile friendly web design

Google announced in April that they were rolling out an update to their algorithm to include whether a site was mobile friendly and use this as part of the method of ranking websites on the search engine. With a huge amount of internet browsing and purchasing done through mobile devices, it was only a matter of time before Google started to rank sites accordingly based on the way they function on these platforms.

There is a website that you can go to and put in your URL to determine whether it is mobile friendly or not. A site can be programmed in such a way that it is or if the desktop version is not compatible then a stand-alone mobile version can be created. If your website was designed using WordPress, a free off the shelf content management system, then there are a number of plugins which can be added to your site to achieve this.

What is responsive web design?

You may hear your web designer talk about responsive web design and wonder what they mean.

Responsive websites are basically sites that automatically adapt the content of the website to ensure that it looks great on any device, this could be a mobile phone, a tablet or a desktop computer.

The things that need to automatically adapt are things such as the font size, the way the images are displayed and the navigation bars.

There is nothing more frustrating than visiting a website on your mobile devise and not being able to view it properly or navigate around the site unless you go on to your computer and that would be the sort of hassle that would put people off visiting your site again.

It may be more work to have responsive web design and therefore cost more money but in my opinion it would be money well spent to gain you more business through your website and create a better user impression.

Keeping track of the progress of your website

It is all to easy to have a website designed and not to keep track of the progress it is making in terms of popularity on the search engines and visitors.

A site needs to be designed in such a way that it performs well on the search engines and also is user friendly as having one without the other simply will not work. To analysis this you can use statistics programs, Web Master Tools and other data that you collect yourselves. Ideally you want to see an improvement in terms of where you rank for your main phrases and would also want to see the number of pages per view and time spent on the site increase. Obviously if it is an e-commerce site you would also hope to see an improvement in sales or enquiries for any other site.

Monitor the website on a monthly if not weekly basis and make a note of any changes you make to see how they affect the visibility and effectiveness of the site.
