Getting more quality traffic to your website

When it comes to web marketing, the more traffic your website has the more sales or enquiries you are likely to get. So therefore you may do everything possible to get visitors to your website, but you do need to bear in mind if it costs anything to get that traffic and the return on your investment. Some avenues of marketing can be more profitable than others. Lots of social media marketing is free, it just costs your time, so this may be well worth doing. Other forms of advertising such as Google Adwords can be quite expensive so is only worth pursuing if you are confident, it is being in sales.

When using a more expensive sort of advertising such as Google Adwords, you need to keep a close eye on what you’re spending and be sure that you are only attracting high quality visits. This means visits that have a high chance of converting to sales. With Google Adwords, you may limit the geographical location that your advert is shown to or only add very specific keywords / phrase. This will result in less traffic but a higher conversion rate because these people are probably more interested in what you have to sell.

Make sure your website doesn’t get left behind

Although your website can be a great sales tool, it does need some TLC to ensure that it performs to its best ability and gives you the results you need. Having a website is the first step to improving your online marketing, but keeping it up to date is vitally important to ensure that it continues to be an asset to your business.

Often when you have a new site, it will work really well to start with and you may feel that you have everything on there that you need. After 12 months or so you may notice a drop in traffic to the site and that you are not coming up as high on the search engines for some of your search terms. This may be because Google and the other search engines like to see fresh content on your site. If they do not see fresh content then they may demote your website down the rankings.

Ideally you should be adding fresh content to your site every week or so and at least every month. This will show Google that you are active and that you are on the ball. They like to promote websites that have relevant and up to date information on them.

Creating a logo that fits with your business

If you have recently started out in business or have not done much marketing in the past, you may not have a logo. A logo is often an image or text or combination of that tells people a bit about what your business is. You may have your company name is your logo or an abbreviation of it. Some brands start off with using their company name in their logo and as their brand builds up and they become more widely recognised, they then might drop their name in favour of just an image. An example of this is McDonalds who often now only have a yellow “m” on a red background.

You should ideally use a graphic designer to create your logo for you as they will not only be able to provide it to you in many different formats but they will also be able to give you a few different options to choose from. They may give you the logo with inverted colours so that you can use it on a white and black background. Logo design costs from around £200 but you may find it cheaper if you are willing to use someone that doesn’t have as much experience.

Designing a website that brings in enquiries

If you have a website which does not sell products or services online then you will probably be wanting people to contact you or make an enquiry. There are a number of times when an ecommerce website is not suitable such as a beauty salon where you may need to have a consultation before you can advise on what procedure they may need to have. IF this is the case then it is important to make it easy for them to contact you.

Firstly, decide what is the best method of contact. If you often cannot answer your phone then you may decide that messages, emails or even WhatsApp may be the best option for you. You need to promote this on your website and make it as easy as possible for people to contact you in this way. Some people prefer to send an email whereas others like to have a contact form online that they can complete. If you also use social media such as Facebook, then allowing people to message you through Facebook messenger is another great way to bring in enquiries.

You also need to add call to actions to the site, so at the bottom of a service description or product description you may add a call us now or enquire about this product button.

Building a website that is aimed at the older generation

Whenever you are designing a website, it is very important to keep in mind who your target audience is. This will help you create a website that is going to appeal to this group of people. For example, if you want to promote a hair and beauty salon then you will want the site to look delicate and pretty to match the treatments you offer. If you are creating a site to sell children’s toys then you want it to be bright and bold.

When it comes to creating a site for the older generation, you may need to consider that many of them may not be used to using the internet and browsing online as much as others. It is important to keep the site simple and easy to navigate round. A recent survey of the over 65’s showed that they often leave a website that is too busy and has too many moving parts or lots of different navigations.

Keep the site crisp and clean and make it easy for them to navigate to the main areas of the site. Avoid using pop ups that may confuse some visitors and always ensure that there are easy ways for them to contact you if they would rather talk on the phone.

Does your website make it easy for visitors to navigate round?

There are so many different types of websites, it is impossible to find one that would suit all sorts of businesses. You need to decide if you need a website where you can sell goods and products via a payment gateway system (also known as an ecommerce site) or if you want a site where you can advertise service or products and gain enquiries. This may be online enquiries such as through a contact for or booking an appointment or to encourage a viewer to pick up the phone and call you.

When designing or redesigning your website it is important that you keep in mind who your target audience is. You can then ensure that your website is actively targeting these sorts of people. If for example you want to advertise your products to young adults or teenagers then it may look and work very differently to a site that is aimed at elderly people.

It is easy to get distracted and start adding in sections to your website that are not really needed. You then run the risk of over complicating the site and actually putting people off.

Make sure that you create a website strategy before you commence with any development as this will ensure that you have included everything you needed to.

If you are working with a marketing or web development agency, they will be able to guide you as to what works and what doesn’t work.

If you already have a website and are finding that your bounce rate is really high and your conversions are low then you often need to go back to the drawing board. It may be that visitors are struggling to find the areas of the website that they want and therefore decide to leave the site altogether. Looking at the number of pages viewed per visit can also help you determine what is happening along with the exit page. If a number of people are leaving on the same page that may suggest that there is something wrong with that page that needs to be rectified.

You need to have access to a good stats package such as Google Analytics as this will give you the information that you need. If you do not have this information then it is almost impossible to know what is happening with your site and where improvements are needed.

Improving your pay per click landing pages

If you are running pay per click campaigns such as Google Adwords or Facebook ads then you need to ensure that the page people are landing on is as good as it can be. There is no point in getting traffic through to your site but the visitor then leaving straight away as the information they need isn’t there or the page layout is not easy to navigate round.

When setting up Pay per Click campaigns that go through to your website, it is not idea to have all the ads go to your home page. Often you may have ads that should go through to a specific page. For example, if you were advertising Logo design then you should get the ad to link through to the Logo design page and not just the generic home page. This will result in a higher conversion rate.

On the landing page, it is important to have the information they are looking for above the fold. Make sure that the page is easy to navigate and that you have a call to action in a prominent place. If your aim is to get the visitor to contact you then have a banner containing your phone number of even a simply contact form towards the top of the page. Making the process as easy as possible for the visitor will give you better results.

Do you still have a stand alone mobile version of your website?

When smart phones first hit the scene and were becoming increasing popular for web browsing, many businesses realised that they needed to ensure that their website would work correctly on these sorts of devices. Often the simplest solution was to create a standalone version of the site which would only be showed to mobile users. This allows you to change menus, display different content and remove elements that may not be mobile compatible without affecting the main site.

The issue with many of these sites is that the mobile version often seemed to be very stripped back and looked quite plain and you may have to remove functionality that is actually a good selling point,

Ideally you want to have a mobile version of your site that looks likes your desktop version (using same colour ways, logos etc,) but is easier to use. This may mean changing the navigation to buttons along the side rather than having to zoom in and out to navigate different parts of the site.

It is quite easy now to adapt your main desktop website to be mobile compatible by setting view points and making sure your elements are responsive.
